Tips for Organizing School, Homework, and Business Paperwork
If you’re like me, your home has two kinds of paper clutter: school papers and business paperwork. Whether it’s the avalanche of school papers that come home in your child’s backpack or the endless documents for work, finding a way to manage it all without losing your sanity is a daily challenge. Add in managing homework for multiple kids, and it can feel impossible to keep up. But with some organization and a system that works for your family, you can create a workspace that is both functional and free of paper clutter. Let’s dive into some easy-to-implement strategies that will help you get on top of the paper chaos in your home and create an organized space that works for school, work, and everything in between.
1. The Backpack Overflow: Tackling School Paper Clutter
The pile of papers that comes home from school every day can easily overtake your countertops or kitchen table if you don’t have a system in place. Here’s what I’ve found works for keeping the school clutter under control:
Create an Inbox System
Designate a spot in your home where all school papers go as soon as your kids walk in the door. I like to use a simple inbox tray for each child—one per kid. This way, you can sort through the papers when you have a moment instead of dealing with them the minute they come through the door. You can review any important papers (permission slips, school newsletters, etc.) at the end of the day, and all those "masterpieces" from art class can be dealt with more intentionally.

The Weekly Purge
Set aside one day a week to go through the inboxes. Toss what you don’t need and file anything important. This keeps the piles from getting overwhelming and helps ensure you don’t miss anything crucial, like forms that need to be signed. If your kids are old enough, get them involved by having them help sort through what’s necessary and what can go.
Long-Term Storage for Keepsakes
For the things you want to keep, like A+ test papers or a particularly adorable art project, create a keepsake bin for each child. This can be as simple as a large plastic container or a pretty file box where you store those memories you’ll want to look back on. That way, you’re not holding onto everything, but you can keep the most special items.
2. Homework Organization: Setting Up a Study Space
With multiple kids, organizing homework can be tricky. Not only do you need a space where they can focus, but you also need to ensure everyone’s assignments are organized and accounted for. Here’s how we make homework time more manageable:
Dedicated Homework Spot
Create a space in your home where your kids know homework gets done. This can be a specific desk in their room, the kitchen table, or even a quiet nook with a comfortable chair. The key is consistency. When they know where to go for homework, it becomes part of their routine, and they’re less likely to procrastinate.
Use a Homework Caddy
I find it helpful to keep a homework caddy filled with all the essentials: pencils, erasers, scissors, and paper. This way, they’re not constantly getting up for supplies, which can quickly become a distraction. The caddy is also portable, so wherever your child is working, they have what they need close by.
Create a Homework Calendar
For older kids who have more complex schedules, I highly recommend a homework calendar or planner. This allows them to write down assignments and due dates, and it teaches them to plan ahead. Encourage them to check it daily and mark off completed tasks. You can even color-code by subject or priority level for visual learners. This method helps your child take ownership of their schoolwork, while also keeping you in the loop on what’s coming up.
3. Organizing Business Paperwork
If you’re a working mom or running a business, managing your paperwork is just as crucial as dealing with the kids' school papers. It’s easy for things to get out of hand if you don’t have a solid system in place for organizing business documents. Here’s what works for me:
Go Digital When Possible
One of the best ways to reduce paper clutter is by going digital. Whenever you can, scan important documents and store them in organized digital folders on your computer. Many programs can help with this, and most modern printers come with a scanning function. This way, you can access everything from anywhere, and it’s much easier to find what you’re looking for when it’s all in one place. Plus, you’re saving yourself from piles of paper cluttering your desk!
Create an Action File System
Not everything can or should go digital. For those papers that you need to keep, create a simple action file system. You can label folders by categories like “To-Do,” “To File,” and “Pending,” or customize based on your business needs. Keep this file system within arm’s reach so that you’re not tempted to leave papers scattered around your desk. When the paper comes in, you know exactly where it goes.
End-of-Day Clean Up
I make it a point to tidy up my workspace at the end of each day. It only takes five minutes to put papers back in the right file or inbox and to clear off your desk. When you come back to your workspace the next morning, everything is neat, and you can get right to work without being distracted by a mess.
